FAQ

Lifting Devices

Lifting Devices for cranes have to meet stringent standards in the US and Canada. ASME B30.20 Below the Hook is the national concensus standard that guides Manuafacturers, Owners, and Users of Lifting Devices, or Below the Hook Lifter. This could be for Vacuum Lifting Devices, Hook lifting devices, or mechanical lifting devices. If we put a lifting lug on it, or if uses Rigging Hardware, we have looked at the ASME B30.20 regarding the application.

Periodic Inspection

Periodic Inspection is required for all rigging equipment. This need to be performed by a qualified person. The periodicity of the inspection depends on the severity of use. Monthly, Quarterly and Annual Inspections are common. It just varies by the lifting application, load cycles, and the conditions of the environment (hot, corrosive are factors that make it severe).

Frequent Inspection

Frequent Inspection refers to the Pre Use inspection and the daily inspections of the below the hook device, or bth lifting device listed in ASME B30.20. The loads applied relative to the rated load helps determine the service class and the fatigue life of the below the hood device. During a frequent inspection you should be checking the lifter visually for:

  • Deformation

  • Corrosion

  • Operability of all of the functions and latches

  • Tags with rating are legible

  • For heat damage including weld spatter

We have a number of checklists available on this page to help with inspections. You can download them to your phone and edit them. They have several references to what’s required in the inspection process.
