Hoisting Gas Bottles by Cranes

Hoisting Gas Bottles by Cranes leads to some interesting choices. In my career, I believe that I’ve seen them slung quite often. Using a sling isn’t legal. OSHA 1910.253(b)(5)(ii)(A) requires that they are lifted by a “suitable platform”. Not everyone does this. Here’s a video link to behaviors I have seen in the field. It’s a bit concerning. The OSHA regulation goes on to address the use of slings thusly;

Slings or electric magnets shall not be used for this purpose."

Understanding The Regulation

Understanding the Regulation is assisted by the OSHA Letter of Interpretation on this topic. For a specific answer that addresses slings, this letters response makes it clear that slings would be seen as illegal as of 2014. While one could look at the code and hear “suitable platform” as something someone competent could put together, the reality is that it would need to be manufactured or engineered with a minimum safety factor of 125% and a load test to 125%. 1926.251 in the construction code sets up materials handling expectations. OSHA does cite ASME B30.20 in a letter of interpretation for the inspection criteria. If you didn’t have an item engineered to meet ASME, you can bet they would double back to the letters that cite ASME B30.20 as a recognized industry standard. They’d be asking what standard did you inspect it to then?

Manufactured Gas Bottle Racks are the Gold Standard

Manufactured Gas Bottle Racks are the Gold Standard as a means to hoist or forklift gas bottles. The reason these are the Gold Standard is because 1926.251 (a)(2)(i) cites the “manufacturer”. It requires a tag by the manufacturer to recommend the safe working load. And when you read the code, it cites the manufacturer twice in five lines of code. Then it does so again in the Letters of Interpretation where they also push to use the ASME B30.20 in the inspection standards. We deliver ASME designed products from Eichinger. We match OSHA’s requirements repeatedly and on every known point.

Pinned gate system to secure the bottles. Also makes releasing the bottles easy.

Other bottle sizes between 220 mm and 320 mm can be configured if needed. They can also be Zinc Dipped for a galvanized coating and a long service life.

Safer Gas Bottle Transportation

Safer Gas Bottle Transportation and Storage is a benefit of the Gas Bottle Racks. When you need to move bottles from site to site, you can do so in the rack and secure the rack instead of each bottle. The wider base and wrapping the bottles in a steel cage that is pinned off will delivery security for each bottle. Whether it’s moved by forklift, crane or just standing in place on the floor, you’ll know that your gas bottles are secure and safe.

Affordability in Multiple Units

We can sell these items quite affordably. For the Six Small Bottle versions, we can sell them from the factory at $1,437.24 as of this writing. Compare this to $4500 and more from other suppliers. If we ship them in multiple units, they can become affordable and deliver the gold standard in gas bottle hoisting. German quality. Modern manufacturing. Code Compliance. And affordability. If they are handled well, they’ll last a career and deliver safety for decades and only need an annual inspection.
